Reconfigurable wall-mounted metasurface for dynamic steering and multiplexing of mmWave beams

mmWall is a wall-mounted reconfigurable metasurface made of varactor-tuned resonators that can steer, reflect or transmit 24 GHz millimeter-wave signals and generate multiple beams for fast alignment and multi-user support without bulky phased arrays.

Background

Millimeter‐wave (mmWave) communications promise gigabit‐class wireless links by exploiting abundant spectrum in the 24 GHz–100 GHz range, making them central to 5G and next‐generation networks. However, mmWave signals suffer from high free‐space attenuation, poor diffraction, and very limited penetration through common building materials. Indoor environments, with walls, furniture, and moving occupants, create frequent blockages and rapid fluctuations in link quality. Users demand seamless, multi‐user connectivity and low‐latency performance for applications such as virtual reality, cloud gaming, and industrial automation, yet the directional nature of mmWave beams and the strict line‐of‐sight requirements leave many indoor areas with coverage holes and unreliable throughput.

Existing approaches attempt to address these issues by densifying access points, deploying active relays, or using phased array repeaters. Densification drives up deployment cost, interference, and backhaul complexity. Active relays and phased arrays require bulky hardware, multiple RF chains, precise calibration, and continuous channel sounding, leading to high power consumption and installation overhead. Passive reflectors and simple metasurfaces offer low‐profile alternatives but typically support only fixed reflection angles or a single beam, lacking dynamic multi‐user steering and fast beam‐alignment capabilities. Amplify‐and‐forward relays introduce noise and latency, while beam‐training protocols remain slow and frequent, impeding truly robust indoor mmWave coverage.

Technology

mmWall is a wall-mounted metasurface composed of co-located electric and magnetic meta-atoms—each a resonant LC circuit loaded with varactors—arranged in a circular geometry optimized for 24 GHz operation. Independent biasing of the electric and magnetic varactors grants a full 360° transmission-phase range, enabling refraction of mmWave beams through walls, 180° reflection, or azimuthal steering. Time-modulated control voltages produce multiple sideband beams with tunable power distribution for fast beam alignment and multi-user support from a single planar surface. Experiments demonstrate 89.8% efficiency for single-beam transmission and 74.5% for dual-beam operation, eliminating the need for separate phased antenna arrays and complex RF chains.

Its differentiation stems from merging Huygens’ metasurface principles with practical varactor loading, shrinking system size and power consumption compared to phased arrays. The circular meta-atom design overcomes scaling and inductance challenges at 24 GHz, while separate electric and magnetic responses deliver abrupt phase shifts with minimal hardware. Time-modulated multi-armed beam synthesis streamlines multi-user support and rapid beam search in one panel, cutting latency and cost. By integrating beam steering, reflection, and refraction into a lightweight wall-mounted panel, mmWall provides a versatile, energy-efficient alternative to RF chain–heavy relays.

Additional info

A wall-mounted metasurface at 24 GHz uses co-located electric and magnetic LC meta-atoms loaded with varactors in a circular geometry to achieve full 360° transmission-phase control. Independent biasing imposes abrupt phase shifts on incident mmWave beams to refract through walls, reflect with 180° offset or steer in azimuth. Time-modulated control voltages generate multiple sideband (“multi-armed”) beams, enabling fast alignment, multi-user support, ~90% single-beam efficiency and reduced RF-chain complexity.
